Standing Ovation for Pinoy Fashion Designer Oliver Tolentino

Oliver Tolentino with his Signature Model Tutay Maristela

Another pride of Pinoys, Oliver Tolentino, got a standing ovation during the El Paseo Fashion Week 2011 at Palm Desert, California where he was featured as Designer of the Week. Oh, bongga!

According to Janet R. Nepales, Pinoy contributor to Female Network, "Oliver’s designs have been worn by the likes of Glee’s Amber Riley and Jenna Ushkowitz; the Oscar-nominated Black Swan cinematographer, Matthew Libatique; and Oscar-winning producer of God of Love, Gigi Dement. Oliver, who won the Sustainable Eco Fashion 2010 Award on the final night of the Islands of the World Fashion Week in Nassau, Bahamas, has also dressed up Grammy winner Patti Austin, One Tree Hill’s Sophia Bush, CSI: Miami’s Eva La Rue, Grammy winner Macy Gray, Tony Award winner Lea Salonga, singers Kuh Ledesma and Arnel Pineda, and former First Lady Imelda Marcos, among others.

Even Oliver could not believe his eyes when he saw the crowd give him a rare standing ovation. “I could not believe it,” he said, describing how he felt when he saw the fashion show guests applauding him and giving him a standing ovation amid loud cheers of “Bravo!”"

El Paseo Fashion Week is considered the most prestigious in California. Oliver’s collection are made of Philippine fabrics like the piƱa, jusi, abaca, and raw silk cocoon. He also uses fresh water pearls from the Philippines in some of his collection.

  1. Ooh La La! Evelyn Sineneng-Smith "Introduced" Francis Libiran, Oliver Tolentino and Monique Lhuillier to Carla Zimbelman's students of "Special Occasion Couture Fabrics"

The fashion students of Monterey Peninsula College recently viewed with awe and admiration the couture gowns projected into the giant 10ftx10ft screen by Evelyn Sineneng-Smith and Carla Zimbelman. The red-carpet beauties featured were Maria Menounos in a blue "jusi", Ginnifer Goodwin in a persimmon-orange frock and Tyra Banks in an architect-designed gown... "architect?"

Monterey, CA (PRWEB) November 04, 2012
Carla Zimbelman, Professor of fashion courses at Monterey Peninsula College, recently invited Evelyn Sineneng-Smith, a Fashion Entrepreneur based in Silicon Valley, to lecture to her fashion students, the couture fabrication techniques utilized by designers Francis Libiran, Oliver Tolentino and Monique Lhuillier. The three featured designers created special occasion gowns for the red-carpet, modeled by celebrities at the recent 2012 Emmys in Los Angeles and the 2012 Blossom Ball in New York.
Oliver Tolentino created a blue gown worn by Maria Menounos, the co-host of the dimpled Mario Lopez of EXTRA. Evelyn described to the fashion students the "jusi", the unique fabric used by Oliver Tolentino. "Jusi" is made of fibers stripped from the stalks and leaves of a banana tree. These fibers were then carefully woven in an old-fashioned hand loom to create the fabric. It was then dyed into royal blue, intricately put together and worn beautifully by Maria Menounos at the recent 2012 Emmy Awards.
World-class designer, Monique Lhuillier, the amazing genius behind her own global brand, created a champagne beige gown meticulously hand-embellished with persimmon-orange vines all over the gown. This was worn elegantly on the red carpet at the recent 2012 Emmys by Hollywood actress, Ginnifer Goodwin, of the popular "Once Upon A Time" television series.
Finally, Evelyn "introduced" Francis Libiran, on the giant screen, to the amazement of the fashion students of Carla Zimbelman. Francis, an architect by profession and who is also a fashion designer based in the Philippines, created his own special occasion fabric using strips of bias cut fabric and individually arranged to create the linear effect. This architecturally-inspired black and white gown was worn by statuesque supermodel Tyra Banks at the 2012 Blossom Ball in New York.
Carla Zimbelman, also herself a fashion designer, teaches fashion courses at the Monterey Peninsula College in Monterey, California. She is currently working with the Department Chair of the college to revamp the Fashion Program of the college. She designs couture handbags with her own label, "Carla Renee". A fashionista can choose from Carla's portfolio of over 300 leather swatches, all made in the USA. She is an alumna of the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in San Francisco, California.
